KINGSTON HOSPITAL NHS FOUNDATION TRUST
CLINICAL FELLOW IN REGIONAL ANAESTHESIA
TO START FEBRUARY 2022 FOR 6 MONTHS
(Full-time, to take part in a 1 in 8 full shift rota)
Kingston Hospital is a 520 bedded District General Hospital serving a population of 320,000 in South West London and Surrey.
Applications are invited for two advanced regional anaesthetic fellow posts of 6 months duration for post FRCA anaesthetists (or equivalent). One post will be starting in February 2022 and the other will be for August 2022. The post will be suitable for those completing their higher training, with an interest in regional anaesthesia, or those who have completed their training to bolster their regional anaesthetic skills base. Applicants must have postgraduate anaesthetic specialty training experience of 5 years minimum, across a wide range of sub-specialty areas. They must be able to demonstrate achievement of the required competencies at intermediate level and ALS provider status certification (or equivalent).
Although this is a post intended for anaesthetists with an interest in regional anaesthesia, any previous significant experience in regional anaesthesia is not necessarily required. The role would incorporate working in a wide range of sub-specialties with a focus in regional anaesthesia. This would include orthopaedics, trauma, breast oncoplastic surgery, general surgery and ophthalmic surgery. On average, there will be greater than 2 fixed clinical days per week dedicated to regional anaesthesia training.
There will be a high level of training and clinical supervision in regional anaesthetics, which will be provided by experienced and keen regional anaesthetists of consultant grade. The fellow will have an educational supervisor and regional anaesthetic fellows lead that will provide appropriate pastoral care and help meet objectives of the post that would fulfil the career aims of the fellow. The post will follow the training objectives of the Royal College of Anaesthesia Curriculum and an appraisal will occur after 6 months. There will be plenty of opportunities to participate in teaching and educational activities, and quality improvement projects.
There is a fully stocked and dedicated block room in the day surgery unit to ensure efficient delivery and appropriate throughput with regard to our regional anaesthesia services.
There are 7 main theatres performing 6000 operations per annum (including all day trauma and emergency lists). There are 4 Day Surgery theatres performing 9000 operations per annum. There is a broad base of surgical specialities catered for, which gives a good grounding as well as more specialised experience relevant to regional anaesthetics.
The Anaesthetic Department is part of the Clinical Support Services. This post will include on-call responsibilities participating in a 1 in 8 full shift pattern that is compliant with the European Working Time Directive and includes prospective cover.
There are 12 critical care beds admitting more than 550 patients per year. Kingston has the largest obstetric unit in the region with 5,950 deliveries.
There is a greater involvement of staff by allowing participation in planning and directing services across the Trust. In particular, clinical staff and those who work directly with patients are involved in decision-making and influence in how services are provide at the highest level.
