This is a joint substantive consultant post for the position of Consultant in Palliative Medicine with the additional responsibility of Departmental Lead for Research at Kingston Hospital. The post holder will work cross-site both at Kingston Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, as part of the Hospital Palliative Care Team (HPCT), and at Princess Alice Hospice within their community team. This is a new post, created to promote integrated palliative care across the hospital and community setting. The post holder will be employed by Kingston Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. This post will have a particular focus on integrated cross-boundary working. At the hospital, the post will be based in the Emergency Department and Acute Admissions Unit. This is a substantive full time post, but Less Than Full Time applicants will also be considered (minimum 0.8WTE).
The hospital palliative care team is a well-established and highly respected team, providing face to face cover 7 days a week, 9am-5pm. With 1027 referrals in 2019-20, of which 50% have a non-cancer diagnosis, we provide Specialist Palliative Care support to adults in the Trust and support the broader end of life care agenda through strategic involvement and development of models of care and education. There is an engaged end of life care strategy group with the Trust Chair being the non-executive lead for EoLC. In 2016, CQC has rated Kingston Hospital as “Good” overall for EoLC, with “Outstanding” for Caring. Kingston Hospital has approximately 520 beds and is based on a single site in Kingston upon Thames. The Sir William Rous Cancer Unit works jointly with the Royal Marsden Hospital to provide on-site outpatient chemotherapy and a wellbeing resource centre.
At Princess Alice Hospice (PAH), the post holder will mainly be based within the community palliative care team, providing medical leadership for the London multi-professional team, covering Kingston and Richmond. At the end of 2016, the Hospice was rated as Outstanding in all 5 domains by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) making us the first hospice to reach this standard. Approximately 3000 patients with advanced, life-threatening illnesses are referred to the Hospice yearly. The Hospice is charitably-funded; NHS funding accounts just over 20% of a total budget of more than £10 million.
